Anorectal manometry is a test that evaluates bowel function in patients with constipation or stool leakage. UPHI is one of the very few centres in Delhi NCR to offer anorectal manometry.
You may be asked to undergo anorectal manometry if you have
- Constipation, particularly difficulty in stool evacuation (discordant defecation)
- Stool leakage or fecal incontinence
- Or to assess your bowel function before or after bowel surgery
The test measures the sensation in the rectum, the strength of the muscles surrounding the anus (anal sphincter muscles) and the reflexes that control normal bowel movements.
The test will thus give your doctor a thorough understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying your bowel problem and hence help them to arrive at the optimal treatment option for you.
Anorectal manometry is a safe test with minimal risks. It is unlikely to cause pain. If you are allergic to latex, you should inform the nurse before the test. Following the test, you can drive back home yourself and resume your day-to-day activities. Your doctors at UPHI understand that it is natural for you to feel shy or embarrassed to have bowel problems.
UPHI offers gentle, compassionate care with understanding. Doctors, patient nurses and assistants are dedicated toans wering your questions and easing anxiety before any examinations and diagnostic tests evaluating your bowel problems. At UPHI, you always come first.
