Breast Augmentation Surgery

By UPHI Hospital, March, 28 2019

Breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical practice to increase the size, shape, or fullness of the breast. Your surgeon places silicone, saline, or alternative composite breast implants under your chest muscles or breast tissue.

Breast augmentation is performed to:

  • Enlarge breasts which are naturally small
  • Bring back breast size and shape after pregnancy, weight loss or breastfeeding
  • Restore symmetry when the breasts are asymmetrical
  • Restore the breast or breasts after surgery

Breast implants

A breast implant is a medical prosthesis that is placed inside the breast to augment, reconstruct, or create the physical form of the breast.

There are three main types of breast implants:

Saline breast implants

Saline implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water. Normally, they’re inserted empty and then filled once they're in place.

Silicone breast implants

Silicone implants are silicone shells pre-filled with a plastic gel (silicone), a thick, sticky fluid that strongly copy the feel of human fat. Generally, women say that silicone breast implants feel more like natural breast tissue

Alternative composite implants can be filled with polypropylene string, soy oil, or some other substance.

What to expect

The procedure is done under general anesthetic or sometimes under local anesthetic. Your surgeon can make an Inframammary incision (under the breast), Transaxillary incision (under the arm) or Periareolar incision (around the nipple) depending on various factors like your body, how much enlargement is involved, the type of implant, etc. Your surgeon will put the breast implant into a pocket above or below your chest muscle. And after the implant is in place, your surgeon will close the cuts with sutures or surgical tape.

The breasts will be covered with gauze after the surgery. You can have drainage tubes that will be removed in a few days. Avoid lifting any heavy things for up to six weeks after implant. You may have over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers to ease your pain. Any swelling or scars will go away with time.

Risks and complications of breast augmentation

Every surgery may have some risks and complications. The breast augmentation may include:

  • Pain in breasts
  • Infection
  • Sensation in the nipples and breast may change temporarily
  • Rupturing or leakage in the implant
  • Bleeding
  • Fluid accumulation
