Women may get breast implants to make their breasts larger and fuller. That practice can be done for reconstructive reasons, like after mastectomy for breast cancer, or for aesthetic motives.
There are basically two types of breast implants: saline and silicone gel.
Saline breast implants: Saline implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water. Normally, they’re inserted empty and then filled once they're in place.
Silicone breast implants: Silicone implants are silicone shells pre-filled with a plastic gel (silicone), a thick, sticky fluid that strongly copies the feel of human fat. Generally, women say that silicone breast implants feel more like natural breast tissue.
You can find both saline and silicone in different sizes and they contain either smooth or textured shells. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is a matter of preference.
The age a woman can receive a saline implant is 18 years and a silicone implant is 22 years. Before your breast implant procedure, you need a medical evaluation. Your surgeon may ask you to avoid taking certain medications a few days or weeks prior to your surgery. You may get breast augmentation performed as an outpatient procedure, or you can stay overnight in the hospital.
The procedure is done under general anesthesia and normally takes one to two hours to complete.
The surgeon will make an incision under your breasts, under your arms, or around your nipples, on the basis of your body, the type of implant, and how much enlargement is going to be done
Your surgeon will put the breast implant into a pocket above or below your chest muscle. And after the implant is in place, your surgeon will close the cuts with sutures or surgical tape.
The breasts will be covered with gauze after the surgery. You can have drainage tubes that will be removed in a few days. Avoid lifting any heavy things for up to six weeks after implant. You may have over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers to ease your pain. Any swelling or scars will go away with time.
