A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue protrudes through a weak spot in a surrounding muscle or connective tissue called fascia. There are three common types of hernia in men; inguinal, hiatal and incisional hernia.

Inguinal Hernias

Inguinal hernias are the most common kind of hernias. In men, the inguinal canal is where the testes descend prior to birth. The canal has the spermatic cord and blood vessels. In an inguinal hernia, part of the intestine protrudes down the canal and into the scrotum. Inguinal hernias are more common in men and consist two-third of all adult hernias.

These hernias occur in the lower abdomen, near the pubic area. Sometimes, these hernias occur on both sides of the pubic area it is known as bilateral inguinal hernias.

Inguinal hernia may be direct or indirect. A direct inguinal hernia occurs by a weak point in the fascia of the abdominal wall while indirect inguinal hernia is a result of a naturally occurring weakness in the internal inguinal ring.

There are numerous approaches available to treat inguinal hernias, like Laparoscopic, tension-free and tension-repair procedures.

Incisional hernia

It occurs when the intestine pushes through the abdominal wall at the site of earlier abdominal surgery. This type of hernia is most common in elderly or obese people who have an inactive lifestyle after abdominal surgery.

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia happens when the upper part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm, a hole generally occupied by the esophagus. There are two main kinds of hiatal hernia.

Sliding hiatal hernia: This is the most common type of hiatal hernia. The sphincter at the base of the esophagus and the top of the stomach protrudes through the hiatus in the diaphragm. A hernia can slide up and down, in and out of the lower chest. This form of hernia is often very small.

Paraesophageal hernia: This is a less common type of hernia. A portion of the stomach protrudes up through the hole in the diaphragm next to the esophagus.

A Hiatal hernia may be treated with a laparoscopic fundoplication surgery. A patient can resume daily activities in a week after the surgery.
