There is not any single test to detect for metastasis. Different tests will disclose different things.

Blood tests Diagnosis for Metastasis Breast Cancer

Regular blood tests like liver enzymes may be high in the presence of liver metastasis. However, these blood tests are generally normal, even in patients with advanced cancer.

Tumor markers for Metastasis Breast Cancer

Some cancers have precise blood tests that can aid in following the disease. After tests, if these levels are high, it can be a sign that the disease is active or progressing. Some of the examples are:

  • Ovarian cancer: CA-125
  • Prostate cancer: PSA (prostate specific antigen)
  • Testes cancer: AFP (alpha-fetoprotein)
  • HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin)
  • Colon cancer: CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen)

There are numerous tumor markers that are less precise, and therefore, not used as a tool for diagnosing metastasis.

Imaging for Metastasis Breast Cancer

There are several tests that are designed to get pictures of various parts of the internal organs of the body. The types of tests are based on the symptoms and/or the type of cancer. Imaging tests include:

  • Ultrasound
  • CT scan
  • Bone scan
  • MRI
  • PET scan
