Though gallstones are generally treated with surgical method, some other treatments are also available other than surgery. Here is a list:
The treatment is generally effective for small stones made of cholesterol. Certain chemicals, like ursodiol or chenodiol which are available in the form of oral bile acid pills, are used to dissolve gallstones. These medicines act by thinning the bile, which allows gallstones to dissolve.
Another nonsurgical method, generally used to treat kidney stones, but can be used for gallstones as well The aim of the treatment is to break up, or fragment gallstones by giving shock waves through the soft tissue of the body.
This nonsurgical treatment method involves injecting a solvent known as methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) into the gallbladder to dissolve the gallstones.
Endoscopic drainage imitates the healthy route of bile from the gallbladder to the small intestine. An endoscopic transpapillary conduct includes accessing the cystic duct with a camera by the mouth and down the throat. Then a wire is sited via the duct into the gallbladder. It is coiled to imitate the route of the bile out of the small intestine, which is the same process as that of a healthy gallbladder.
A nonsurgical treatment, generally effective when followed by gallbladder removal. Percutaneous cholecystostomy opts for seriously ill patients who cannot bear surgery immediately. The practice involves using a needle to extract fluid from the gallbladder and then inserting a catheter through the skin to drain the fluid. The catheter is left for a number of weeks, after which gallbladder removal surgery is done to avoid recurrence.
Transmural drainage makes a new tract straight through the stomach into the gallbladder. A stretchy metal stent is then placed to let the gallbladder to drain into the small intestine. This permits the gallbladder to decompress.
Done for patients with acute cholecystitis or gallbladder inflammation and who are unable to have surgery, an endoscopic stent may be placed between the gallbladder and alimentary tract to drain an infection in a process called acute cholecystoenterostomy.
