If you’re considering breast augmentation surgery, it is important to know what to expect during your recovery. At CAPS, we want each of our patients to make fully informed decisions regarding their cosmetic procedures. So, we’ve put together some information to help you to prepare for your recovery and to heal well. After your breast augmentation surgery, you are sure to be excited to see results.
It is important to keep in mind, however, that the process doesn’t end as soon as you get home. In fact, the steps you take in the days and weeks after your surgery will be extremely important in helping you achieve the best possible results. Below, we’ve outlined some of our key tips for optimizing your recovery from breast augmentation.
After your breast augmentation procedure, it is vital that you refrain from overexerting yourself. If your job or daily life require physical exertion, you will need to take some time off or enlist plenty of assistance.
As an easy rule of thumb, you should not lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. If you have young children, this means you’ll need someone to assist you with their care while you recover.
In addition to avoiding physical exertion, you should get as much rest as possible. Your body heals faster while you sleep, so sleep as much as you can during your first few days of recovery. Keep in mind that you should not sleep on your stomach during your recovery as this can displace your implants.
It is normal to experience some pain and discomfort after your procedure. This is simply a part of the healing process. Your doctor will give you a prescription for the pain medication that will best suit your needs. If possible, you should fill this prescription before your surgery. Doing so will give you one less thing to worry about after your procedure.
Take your pain medication as directed and be sure not to take it on an empty stomach. Even if you don’t feel hungry after your procedure, try to eat something simple, such as toast or crackers, before taking your medication. Most patients find that, after a day or two, they no longer require prescribed pain medication and can manage their pain with over-the-counter pain medications, such as Tylenol.
After your procedure, you may feel a bit dehydrated and nauseous. With this in mind, it is important to have plenty of water and light, healthy foods on hand.
Your body will need plenty of nutrition during the healing process and you will need to replenish your fluids, which were diminished when preparing for surgery.
If you have trouble remembering to drink enough water, try to keep a water bottle with you and set a “sip reminder” alarm on your phone. Try your best to drink at least 64 ounces a day. In addition to drinking plenty of water, your diet should include plenty of protein, fruits, and vegetables as these items will give your body the energy it needs to heal as quickly as possible.
Maintaining a positive attitude is a crucial part of your recovery. This positive attitude will help you to overcome any hurdles you may face and to embrace the recovery process as one step towards looking, feeling, and living better!
Before your surgery, you should educate yourself about what to expect before, during, and after your breast augmentation. By doing so, you will establish realistic expectations for your recovery and you feel more comfortable knowing exactly what to expect every step of the way.
