Varicose Vein Treatment with Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy
By UPHI Hospital, March, 9 2019

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. It involves injecting solutions, known as sclerosing agents directly into the damaged veins. The chemical irritates the lining of the blood vessel, making it to collapse and stick together and the blood to clot. With time, the vessel changes into scar tissue that fades from view. Apart from withdrawing the appearance of varicose or spider veins, sclerotherapy may also decrease pain and side effects caused by damaged veins.

The Procedure Sclerotherapy to Treat Varicose Vein

In sclerotherapy, generally, the salt solution is injected directly into the vein through a very fine needle. At this stage, you may get mild discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes, particularly when larger veins are injected. The procedure takes approximately 15 - 30 minutes.

The number of veins injected in one sitting depends on the size and location of the veins and the general health of the patient. Sclerotherapy is done in the doctor's office by a dermatologist or a surgeon.

What to Do Before the Procedure of Sclerotherapy

Before sclerotherapy, you must avoid certain medications. Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking

Side Effects of Sclerotherapy

  • Itching
  • Bruising
  • Raised, red areas at the injection site

These symptoms can last several days or weeks.

Other Side Effects of Sclerotherapy may include:

  • Larger veins that have been injected may become lumpy and hard.
  • Brown lines or spots may appear at the vein site.
  • Neovascularization: the growth of new, tiny blood vessels at the site of sclerotherapy treatment.

These symptoms go away in several months.

What Happens After Sclerotherapy

  • After sclerotherapy, you can drive yourself home and resume your regular daily activities. Walking is encouraged.
  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory drugs for at least 48 hours.
  • Showers are allowed, but the water must be cooler than normal. The injection sites can be washed with mild soap and lukewarm water.

Sclerotherapy Effectiveness

50%-80% of injected veins may be removed with each sitting of sclerotherapy. However, new veins can appear at the same rate as earlier. If required, you may come back for injections.
