What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. It can occur in women and rarely in men. In cancer, the body’s cells multiply uncontrollably. It is the excessive cell growth that causes cancer. Breast cancer can be:

  • Ductal carcinoma: This begins in the milk duct and is the most common type.
  • Lobular carcinoma: This starts in the lobules.

Invasive breast cancer is when the cancer cells break out from inside the lobules or ducts and invade nearby tissue, increasing the chance of spreading to other parts of the body.

Non-invasive breast cancer is when the cancer is still inside its place of origin and has not broken out. However, these cells can eventually develop into invasive breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Prevention:

Reduce breast cancer risk by adapting to healthier habits. Following lifestyle changes can lower your risk:

  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Don’t smoke
  • Stay active
  • Breast-feed
  • Watch what you eat
  • Control your weight

Symptoms:

The most common symptoms of breast cancer is a lump or an area of thickened tissue in the breast. Though most lumps are not cancerous, but if you notice any lump or other symptoms you should have them checked by a specialized Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon  , Other symptoms include:

  • Pain in the armpits or breast that does not change with the monthly cycle
  • Pitting or redness of the skin of the breast, like the skin of an orange
  • Rash around or on one of the nipples
  • Discharge from a nipple, possibly containing blood
  • Sunken or inverted nipple
  • Change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Peeling, flaking, or scaling of the skin on the breast or nipple

Breast Cancer Screening:

An early screening or looking for cancer even before one develop symptoms can help find and fight cancer at an early stage. Since the number of breast cancer cases are rising, more younger women are getting affected, most are presenting only after symptoms develop (so usually stage 2B and beyond, rarely earlier stage) and we cannot prevent this cancer, all we can do is to detect this cancer early.
