Depending on your condition, breast reduction surgery may be done in an outpatient facility, or you can stay at least one night in the hospital. You may be given general anesthesia during the procedure in both cases, that means you will be put to sleep throughout the procedure.
Generally, the breast reduction surgery takes around two to five hours, sometimes it takes longer. Your surgeon will make an incision around your nipple then downward on the breast in the shape of a keyhole. Your surgeon will remove extra skin, tissue, and fat from your breasts and relocate your nipple. Your surgeon can use drainage tubes and then stitch up your breasts and wrap them in particular gauze. You may also be recommended to wear a surgical bra.
You will require taking at least one week off from work for breast reduction surgery. Your doctor will tell you on follow-up appointments to remove bandages and stitches. Avoid physical activities for at least one month after surgery during recovery.
After the procedure, you may experience tiredness and breast pain, which is normal. Your surgeon will prescribe an oral painkiller to relieve you during the first few days after surgery. You must also avoid heavy lifting.
