What is Hand Pain?

Hands are the most delicate and complex structure of your body comprising about 27 bones. Joints and muscles in hands enable you to have precise, strong and dexterous movements; unfortunately, they are also susceptible to injury which may cause severe hand pain. The inflammation of the joints is referred to as arthritis and it is the prime cause of Hand Pain. Arthritis may occur in any joints and most commonly occur in wrists and hands. Usually, there are hundreds of different types of arthritis and the common types are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Over the years the joints of your hands undergo severe wear and tear. The articular cartilage covering the edges of bones reduces and this leads to painful symptoms in hand and this is referred to as osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused when the joints become inflamed and cause stiffness and pain. it starts from hands and feet and effects other parts of the body.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel is basically the narrow passageway of bone and ligament located at the end of the hand. It comprises of the median nerve as well as tendons and it promotes smooth movements of fingers. When the median nerves are squeezed by the narrow carpal tunnel it causes carpal tunnel syndrome. The narrowing of the tunnel can be caused due to thickening of fractious tendons or inflammation and this causes severe pain in hands.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is the condition affecting the tendons your thumb region. The area around your tendons in the thumb usually inflamed because of the swelling in two tendons around the base of the thumb. Because of this swelling and inflammation, the pressure is put on nerves and this causes numbness and pain around your thumb.


Gout is considered to be the complicated type of arthritis and it is a painful condition which may affect people of any age. People having gout usually experience severe attacks of joint pain. It usually affects the joints present at the edges of your big toe and it may also occur anywhere across your knees, feet, wrists, and hands. So, people that are having gout in their wrists or hand would experience intense attacks of pain, redness, burning, and tenderness.


Lupus is the condition where the immune system of your body mistakenly attacks the helpful cells and damages it. Joint stiffness and pains in hands are the common signs of lupus. As lupus shoots up it causes inflammation across the body and due to inflammation thin lining around joints widens and this leads to swelling and pain in wrists, feet, and hands.

Raynaud’s Phenomenon

Raynaud’s Phenomenon is also popularly called as Raynaud’s Disease and due to this condition, some specific areas of your body becomes cold and numb, especially when you are exposed to cold temperatures or overly stressed. People with this condition usually have intense body’s reaction towards stress and cold. The blood vessels in your hands become narrow faster and it quickly tightens than normal which may cause mild to severe pain in your hands.

Stenosing Tenosynovitis

The trigger finger also referred to as stenosing tenosynovitis is the painful condition and it usually occurs in people when their thumb or finger gets stocked in a bent position. When the finger is moved, the tendons gradually slide through the tunnels and when it swells or inflamed the tendons fail to slide it through the tunnels and it gets stuck and causes pain in your hand.
