What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy, also known as diagnostic laparoscopy or minimally invasive surgery, is a specialized surgical diagnostic technique is used for performing surgery to examine the organs inside the abdomen. In the traditional surgery, the surgeon uses a single incision, is called a open surgery. But, the Laparoscopy is a low-risk, minimally invasive procedure that requires only several small incisions 0.5 to 1cm called po,rt. At each port a tubular instrument known as a trochar is inserted.

Laparoscopy uses a specialized instrument with the camera at the front instrument called a laparoscope to look at the abdominal organs passed through trochar in the abdominal wall. As it moves along, the camera sends images to a video monitor. Laparoscopy allows your doctor to see inside your body in real time, without open surgery. Your doctor also can obtain biopsy or sample of tissue, from a particular organ in the abdomen.

In certain situations a surgeon may choose to use a special type of port that is large enough to insert a hand, is called “hand assisted” laparoscopy. The incision may require incision which is larger than the other laparoscopic incisions for the hand port.

Why is laparoscopy performed?

When the abdominal problems are not diagnosed with the help of imaging technique like ultrasound, CT scan and MRI scan then Laparoscopy is prescribed. It is usually used to identify and diagnose pelvic or abdominal pain. It’s usually performed when non-invasive methods are unable to help with diagnosis.

Laparoscopy is performed when the tests from imaging technique don’t provide enough information. It may be recommended examining the following organs:

  • Abdominal or stomach pain
  • Appendix
  • Pelvic or the reproductive organs:
  • Gall-bladder
  • Pancreas
  • Liver: to detect liver disease
  • Colon (small intestine and large intestine)
  • Spleen

These can be detected by examining with a laparoscope:

  • An abdominal mass or tumor
  • Fluid in the abdominal cavity
  • Effectiveness of certain treatments
  • Degree to which a particular cancer has progressed

Our Laparoscopy surgeon can perform an intervention to treat your condition immediately according to the tests & diagnosis.
